The mugshot depicts a young Bill Gates in police custody in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The caption suggests he was arrested for running a red light and driving without a license, but according to Albuquerque police, he was actually arrested for failing to stop at a stop sign.
In a 2007 interview with Time magazine, Gates discussed the incident that led to his famous mug shot. He was 22 at the time (though other sources indicate he was 21) and was driving Paul Allen's car when he was pulled over for not having his license. Gates recalled spending the night in jail with other detainees and noted that the experience led him to always carry enough cash to bail himself out in the future.
A 1998 Associated Press article reported that the same mug shot was featured on the cover of Brill's Content, a media watchdog magazine, in a story about Microsoft's public relations efforts. The article also mentioned that Gates had a prior arrest in 1975 for speeding and driving without a license.
