Early Life and Criminal Beginnings

Siegel was born into a poor Jewish immigrant family and grew up in a rough neighborhood. He started his criminal career as a teenager, running errands for local gangsters. By his late teens, he had become a full-fledged member of the mob, engaging in activities such as bootlegging, gambling, and racketeering during Prohibition.

Rise in the Underworld

Siegel was a founding member of the infamous "Murder, Inc.," a group of contract killers responsible for numerous assassinations ordered by the mob. He was known for his violent temper, hence the nickname "Bugsy," which he reportedly despised. Despite his reputation for brutality, Siegel was also charming and well-connected, mingling with Hollywood elites and even investing in the film industry.

Las Vegas and the Flamingo Hotel

Siegel is perhaps best known for his role in the development of Las Vegas. In the 1940s, he envisioned turning the sleepy desert town into a gambling haven. He took over the construction of the Flamingo Hotel, one of the first major casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. However, the project was plagued by cost overruns and delays, which angered his mob backers.

Downfall and Assassination

The Flamingo's initial failure and Siegel's perceived mishandling of mob funds led to his downfall. On June 20, 1947, Siegel was shot and killed at the home of his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, in Beverly Hills, California. His murder remains officially unsolved, though it is widely believed that it was ordered by the mob in retaliation for his perceived mismanagement.

Legacy

Siegel's vision for Las Vegas ultimately came to fruition, and he is often credited with helping to shape the city into the gambling and entertainment capital it is today. His life has been the subject of numerous books, films, and television shows, making him one of the most infamous figures in American organized crime history. Despite his violent end, Siegel remains a legendary figure in the annals of the American mob.
